Apprentices across the automotive industry competed in the IMI Skill Auto Body Repair Heats 2016. This competition, which is now in its fourth year, has previously run across three sections. These sections included Automotive Refinishing, Automotive Technology, Automotive Body Repair, and for the first time this year the introduction of a Heavy Vehicle Engineering segment.
The ProWorx range was the IMI auto body filler product of choice for the prestigious national qualifying rounds. The range is used by highly skilled participants to complete a series of auto body repair tasks on small and large panel damage. This trusted product resulted in top standard repairs and helped to showcase the skill set of today’s best-in-class upcoming professionals.
This year’s IMI Skill Auto competition event attracted over 180 employers and an impressive 78,000 visitors. These competitive exhibitions showcase the range of skill and knowledge being developed within the automotive repair industry today. A total of 78 highly skilled young technicians took part in the live stages of this event. The participants are challenged with completing a series of technical tasks during the intensive one-day heats. Of these, the top six scoring competitors from each individual skill area will move forward to the finals of the WorldSkills national finals, which will be held at the UK Skills Show in November.
The application process requires the completion of an on-line question paper, and if the resulting score qualifies, participants are invited to live practical assessment from which finalists are determined. Over 600 individuals completed the Skills Auto test on-line, out of which 78 made it to the qualifiers. Of these participants, only 18 will make it to the finals. This level of applicants and participation just highlights the level of competition and skill within the industry today.
The WorldSkills Uk competition is designed to showcase the upcoming stars and to also raise standards within the industry. The events not only focus on applicable hands-on skills but also focus on networking and personal skills which are invaluable to both the participating apprentices and also employees.
